Air Duct Cleaning After Remodeling

worker remodeling a house, cutting into the air ductsAngie’s List has a great article on how to keep your house clean during a remodeling job. It’s full of good advice for keeping the construction mess from getting out of hand. It does have one area it lacks, however; air duct cleaning. So, we’d like to add some information to the article for you to consider.

Remodeling and Air Ducts

If you have a good filter on your air vents, normal situations aren’t going to be too much trouble, but remodeling isn’t a normal situation, is it? No, it really isn’t. Good construction companies will help reduce the issue by putting plastic over any vents, but this isn’t always a perfect solution. Furthermore, sometimes remodeling requires construction crews to open up air ducts in order to reroute them for the additions. Even under the best circumstances, there’s still a good chance that dust and debris made during the construction will get into your air ducts.

According to the US Department of Energy, up to 40% of the energy your house uses goes into heating. If your ducts get dirty, that puts extra stress on your HVAC, which can force it to use more energy to function normally. With all that construction debris, some of it is bound to get into the vents and cause clogs, even when your remodeling crew does everything to avoid it.

Debris From Remodeling

Construction produces a lot of debris. Sanding and cutting wood will produce a lot of sawdust. Knocking down walls for expansion creates drywall dust. Then there’s the random bits of construction material: sand, concrete, and others. All of these things can play havoc on your air ducts.

Post-Remodeling Clean-Up

To keep your HVAC system running properly, you’ll need to get that mess cleaned up. After you finish construction, you should have a professional air duct cleaning company come by and clean it out. Doing so will help increase the life-span of your HVAC system and save you money on your power bill. It could also help reduce problems with allergies. There’s just no reason not to do it.
