Are Your Air Ducts Making Your Allergies Worse?

Itchy throats, congestion, watery eyes, coughing. Allergies suck. Spring can be the worst time of year for that, especially in Cache Valley. As the trees and plants are starting to put out their pollen, your sinuses go haywire. On top of that, the winter funk we’re all still recovering from – especially last winter! – leaves us struggling to get up to speed. You don’t want anything to make your allergies worse. That’s why it might be a good idea to clean out your air ducts.

Delayed Allergies

We often get customers telling us that allergies are why they call us. They haven’t bothered with cleaning air ducts in a long time – may never have even thought about it – but their allergies have been bothering them.  Not just that, they say their allergies are persisting much longer than usual, even after the spring cleaning. They just won’t go away, no matter how thoroughly they clean their homes. Something else is wrong.

Allergens in the Air Ducts

While it is true that most modern air ducts will have good filters on them and are usually sealed, that doesn’t mean there isn’t something in them. For starters, those filters only work for so long before they have to be changed. That’s easily overlooked. Even with proper filters, dust builds up slowly over time. Air duct cleaning may not be an every year chore, but completely neglecting it leads to problems. That’s before we consider the tendency children have to open up and play with air duct vents.

On top of that, there are a lot of old homes through northern Utah and Southern Idaho. Many of these homes aren’t up to date with their air ducts. They often aren’t properly sealed and may not even have filters on them. In these cases, any dust and allergens in the air can be carried through them without obstruction.  If it goes on for too long, it can even lead to a psychological issue called “sick building syndrome.”

Spring Cleaning Is The Best Time

With spring cleaning, there’s no better time to get your air ducts cleaned. You’re already doing other chores to get rid of the winter funk, right? Why not just add one more chore to the list – one that you don’t even have to do yourself! And while we’re at it, we can now pair it with carpet cleaning for the most thorough freshening of your air. Carpet cleaning and duct cleaning together will get rid of most of the hidden dust that’s been choking up your sinuses, letting you breathe easy.
